Four weeks later, the wedding takes place at the Piarist Church of Maria Treu in Vienna’s Josefstadt district. The celebration features a multi-tiered wedding cake made from various sizes of the LIPIZZAN® CAKE, which is produced daily.

The unique love story of Karl Count of Leiningen & Christine—daughter of Theresia Hauer—further enriches the history and romantic allure of the LIPIZZAN® CAKE & LIPIZZAN® CHOCOLATE BALL:
From 1895 onwards, Karl Count of Leiningen served as a diplomat for Bavaria in Vienna. A passionate Egyptologist, he made several trips to Cairo, where he participated in excavations of the Sphinx. He would bring other famous flour-based Viennese chocolate cakes as gifts; however, given that these cakes dried out quickly, they rarely brought much enjoyment by the time he reached his destination after a journey lasting up to a week.
A colleague then recommends that he buy the specialty LIPIZZAN® CAKE from Theresia Hauer Chocolate at Vienna’s Stephansplatz—moist chocolate cakes made with ground almonds instead of flour, fine apricot jam, and white chocolate glaze (which remain moist if stored cool and dry), and which come uniquely packaged in sturdy hatboxes.
He follows this recommendation, visits the branch at Vienna’s Stephansplatz, and falls head over heels in love with Christine—the daughter who is helping out her mother, Theresia Hauer, at the Stephansplatz branch that day.

The packaging of the LIPIZZAN® CAKE & LIPIZZAN® CHOCOLATE BALL in hatboxes is also legendary. In the 19th century, this gave rise to the slogan that has been used for our products ever since:
"IT´S CHOCOLATE, AND IT COMES IN A HAT"
This legendary design element is still retained today in the design language of our LIPIZZAN® brand packaging.
THE ROMANTIC STORY REPEATED …
In 1960—four generations later—this family story repeated itself in remarkable fashion with Annemarie Lehner-Schmid (great-granddaughter of founder Theresia Hauer and the then-owner of our chocolate production) and Robert Lehner, who also tied the knot for a happy life together after just four weeks. Naturally, the celebration featured a multi-tiered wedding cake made from various sizes of the LIPIZZAN® CAKE—a cake forever associated with moments of happiness and major life events.
A century later, photographs of the bridal couple in front of the Great Pyramid of Giza inspired the designers at LECONTE CHOCOLATIERS® to create the triangular packaging for the LIPIZZAN® CHOCOLATE BAL; this design incorporates an image of a typical 19th-century hat style, referencing the hatboxes Theresia Hauer used to package her products.
